The Foundation was named to commemorate J. Herbert Williams Sr. because of
the leadership roles he played in his family, church, and community. He gained
high respect because he pursued high, but unselfish goals with prayer,
perseverance, and industry.
J. Herbert was born in a rural, sharecropping family in 1898. He was denied a
formal education beyond the third grade when his frustrated father deserted the
family, and he suddenly became the man of the house for his grandmother, mother,
and three sisters. He plowed the farm and cut timber for railroad cross ties
from dusk to dawn. He was not bitter and never voiced the complaint of abuse.
His constant goal in life was to improve himself by associating with progressive
families who owned land, had trades, and/or education. Viola Faust Shepard
belonged to one of these families, and J. Herbert married her in 1922 because of
her outer and inner beauty. They worked and prayed together for over fifty-four
years of marriage and were in a position to send seven children to college.
The lives of J. Herbert and Viola intertwined into a baton of HOPE that was
passed on to their children and many others. It was because of the visions of
these two great people that the Foundation was chartered in Pennsylvania in 1989
and is now a charitable organization. It has as its goal to raise funds to give
scholarships to underprivileged meritorious students who are in pursuit of a
higher education. These students will be encouraged to become productive
participants in life and to advance themselves by NETWORKING through this website which
is sponsored and organized by the
Foundation.
