The following scholarships are awarded by the Foundation:
Viola Faust Shepard Williams Award
Viola and J. Herbert Williams were the parents of Edward and six other adult
children. They were able to obtain little formal education during the 1920's,
but they valued education, sacrificed and were in a position to send all of
their children to college.
Alberto Simpkins Miller Miles Award
Alberta and the late George Miles are the parents of Febere Miles Williams.
They were deprived of advanced education because of the Depression and
segregation. However, they provided a healthy educational environment so that
all of their children could go to college.
Elizabeth McMillen Rose Award
Elizabeth, a niece of J. Herbert Williams, was the first in her immediate
family tree to get a college degree. She spent her entire career at Claflin
College, the alma mater of her and her husband, where she directed and
re-designed the department of physical education. She is the wife of the late
Arthur Rose, a professor of art. They balanced family, church and career
activities and became role models. They spent many summers and all of their
sabbaticals pursuing advanced degrees at New York University and Indiana
University.
Febere Miles Williams Award
Febere spent 31 years as a teacher-librarian in the Chester-Upland school
district. She was known to be a disciplinarian and a master teacher who knew how
to motivate most students. She is known as an excellent mother and manager of
her home. These qualities enabled her husband to return to school and to go into
a medical practice.
